Shape & Boundries
Region Size
The goal set for Region V in 1988 was to establish and maintain 50 active chapters by the year 2000.
We met and exceeded the first part of the goal in 1998!!!
In 1986, Region V, with a total of 28 chapters, was the 7th largest region in terms of active chapters. At the start of the 1994 academic year, the Region was tied for 1st with a total of 41 chapters. At the time of the 1994 National Convention, the Region had grown to 43 chapters. As of the 1996 convention, the Region stood at 44 chapters making it number one in terms of the number of active chapters. As of the fall of 1997, the region stood at 45 active chapters. On May 3, 1998, with the chartering of Alderson-Broaddus, Region V established our 50th chapter. With the re-activating of the Xi Upsilon chapter at Mt Union College, our region has grown to 51 active chapters! Alpha Epsilon Eta, at Concord College in Athens, West Virginia became the 52 chapter in December, 1999. Our 53 chapter, Alpha Epsilon Theta, at Akron, was activated in February 2000. At the start of the 2000 convention, Region V consists of 54 active chapters as Alpha Epsilon Iota at Xavier was chartered in September, 2000.
The goal set for Region V in July 1999 was to establish and maintain 60 active chapters by the year 2005.
There are many reasons why Region V is growing. The chapters themselves provide the opportunities for leadership, friendship, and service. As these opportunities are unique on each campus, the individuality of each Region V chapter is recognized, celebrated, and encouraged. The region does not expect, nor does it want, each chapter to look like each other in every aspect. This allows the region to have a wide variety of experiences, resources and expertise to build upon and to share.
As the region has grown, so has its alumni involvement. In the early days of the region, the number of involved alumni could be counted on one hand. Currently, the database listing involved alumni and staff is well over 100. Alumni are located throughout the region and their roles and time availability range greatly. These alumni serve as both a resource and support to the chapters and the fraternity. Without the availability of these alumni, the growth the region has experienced would have been that much more difficult.
Section Boundary Changes
Region V is currently organized into 7 Sections. They are:
- Section 56 - Western Ohio
- Section 59 - Easter Ohio
- Section 61 - West Virginia
- Section 64 - Northwestern Pennsylvania
- Section 65 - Western Southwestern Pennsulvania
- Section 66 - Eastern Southwestern Pennsylvania
- Section 67 - East and Central Kentucky
In 1973, Ohio was composed of two sections, Section 57, Northern Ohio, and Section 58, Southern Ohio. During that year, a proposal was submitted through Dave Buckland of the Zeta Kappa chapter, to unite Ohio into one section. This was done due to the fact that Ohio was undergoing negative growth during that time. It was felt that for administrative and communication purposes one Section in Ohio would better serve the needs of the chapters. The two sections were combined into Section 57. Through the years, Section 57 grew to the point that it consisted of 13 chapters. In 1993 94 the Section 57 Chair, Ed Richter, proposed having Ohio grow into two Sections again. Section 57 was retired and Sections 56 and 59 were created. These Sections began operating at the start of the 1994 95 academic year.
Section 61, West Virginia, has undergone changes in its make up throughout the years while being able to maintain a constant number of chapters, thus providing a leadership foundation that continues to be built upon. Through its long history, the chapters within the Section have developed written policies and procedures for administrative purposes. Examples of these include a rotation policy for Sectional Conferences as well as a standardized mileage chart for the awarding of man mile awards at conferences. Section 61 is expected to grow in the future as opportunities present themselves. Since the 1994 convention, the chapter at Marshall University has re-emerged as an active chapter, the Alpha Delta Omicron chapter was established at West Virginia Wesleyan College, the Alpha Epsilon Alpha chapter was established at Alderson-Broaddus College and Alpha Epsilon Eta was established at Concord College.
Section 64, Northwestern Pennsylvania; Section 65, West Southwestern PA/Upper pan-handle of WV; and Section 66, East Southwestern PA, were previously known as one Section, Section 63, Western Pennsylvania. In 1973, there were 8 active chapters in Western Pennsylvania. By 1990, the number had grown to 16 chapters. Section 63 was larger than some of the Regions within the fraternity. Due to the growth experienced throughout the Section and the increased corps of available volunteers, in 1990, a proposal to have Section 63 grow into the two Sections was proposed through the Section 63 Chair, Rick Martin. The chapters approved of the administrative changes in February 1990. Section 63 was retired and Sections 62 and 64 became operational in September 1990. At the Region Conference in 2003 the voting delegates from Sections 61 and 62 voted to transfer the upper pan-handle of West Virginia from Section 61 to Section 62. At the Section 62/64 Conference in 2004 the Section 62 Voting Delegates voted to divide Section 62 into two sections 65 and 66 effective July 1, 2004.
In 1974, there were four active chapters listed for Section 67. (One of these chapters was subsequently lost to the Region due to realignment of the Regions.) By 1981, the Section had shrunk to one active chapter. By the end of the 1980's Section 67 was in difficulty and was in danger of disappearing. The one remaining chapter, Delta Theta at the University of Louisville, was down to one active member. Through the leadership efforts of the then Sectional Chair, Lee Peters, the chapter was revitalized. Since 1989, the Section has grown to 4 chapters and is developing its own identity within the framework of Alpha Phi Omega.
