Fun Tidbits
The Map
In 1985, a map was made of the region. This map was construction of wood. Heavy wood. The map was cut into pieces. Each chapter within the region was given a piece representing their geographic area to take home. The idea was for the chapters to bring the pieces back at future conferences. The idea was to build the map at opening sessions of the conference. The map was retired several years ago.
Games People Play
From time to time, business on the convention floor tends to be less than stimulating. To assist the Region V delegates to keep in focus, various diversions have been implemented. These diversions have included "Convention Battleship," "Convention Bingo," and "Convention Connect Four." Play in each of the diversions is predicated upon the convention chair or one of the delegates making a parliamentary motion or taking action of some description. The first Region V delegate to complete the required moves approaches a microphone and announces victory by informing the convention by use of the appropriate phrase associated with the diversion. An example of such an announcement could be, "Mr. Chair, you sunk my battleship."
The Lost Delegate of 1988
John Jay is a mystery delegate who began to be registered at the St Louis convention. This Alpha Beta Sigma Chapter (Robert Morris College) brother was missing in action and was overdue at an organizational meeting of one of the reference committee meetings. The Sergeant at Arms at the convention searched high and low for this brother (as did several of the Region V delegation) only to find out that the delegate in question was the name of a campus building that inadvertently got entered in the wrong area on the registration form for convention by the national office. Every convention since that time, John Jay has been registered as a non-voting delegate.
In the beginning was Region V...in the end was Region V
At the same convention in St Louis, it was duly noted at role call that Region V had the convention book ended as the roll call began that year with Alpha Gamma Phi and ended with Beta.
National Pledge Standards/Life Membership Pin
The fraternity pledge member standards were developed at the Nashville convention. The committee responsible, the Friendship Committee, was chaired by a delegate from Delta Gamma, Greg Ellis. The Life Membership pin currently used by the fraternity, was also designed by brother Ellis.
A Female First
Regardless of what is maintained by the national office, the first undergraduate female brother to chair a portion of a business meeting at convention was Melissa Travis from Alpha Alpha Pi from Westminster College at the 1982 Boston convention. She creatively procured the chair's gavel and conducted "business" while votes were being counted.
A Banner Region
Region V and its Sections all have their own individual banners. The Regional Director has the responsibility of issuing these banners and it is the responsibility of the Sectional Chairs and the RD to ensure that the banners are safeguarded and present at conferences and conventions.
On the road with APO...
One of the unique features of Region V is the mobility of its chapters and volunteers. Road trips are not uncommon in the history of the Region. Chapters, alumni, sectional staff and chairs from one section are welcome and expected at conferences outside of their own section. Naturally, the chairs are expected to bring their banners...
And now the news...
The Region V newsletter, currently (1997) titled "Three Dots and a Dash," has been in publication since the mid 1970s. The newsletters have been published by Regional Directors or by various volunteers throughout the years. The frequency of publication and format of the newsletter varies but the distribution goes to all active chapters, interest and petitioning groups, alumni, and National Board members. Articles and input are always welcome.
In 1997, various websites were established in Region V on the Internet. A few of of these addresses at that time included:
